The Value of the Right Introduction

Why a single conversation, made at the right moment, can change the direction of a career or an organisation.

Most of the significant opportunities I have encountered in my professional life did not arrive through a formal process. They arrived through a conversation — often an unexpected one, with someone who understood both sides of what was possible.

This is not unique to me. When you ask leaders and entrepreneurs about the moments that changed their trajectory, introductions feature consistently. The right meeting, at the right time, with the right person.

What makes an introduction valuable is not simply the connection itself. It is the context in which it is made, the credibility of the person making it, and the genuine alignment between the two parties. A careless introduction — made without thought for fit or timing — can do more harm than good.

The most valuable introductions I have made and received share a common quality: they were made by someone who understood what both parties actually needed, not just what they said they were looking for.

That kind of judgment cannot be automated. It requires trust, experience and a genuine interest in the outcome for everyone involved.
